Youth Drug Use and Other Addictive Behaviours

This series of pages provides an overview of youth use and abuse of substances. Readers should investigate further to find local statistics and data that will be more specific to their situation, but the evidence noted here clearly shows that all communities and all family can experience the harms associated with problem use of substances.

This section also points another, more positive truth, that most young people experiment with substances and then regulate their own behaviour later in life. If we can, through projects like this one, reduce the harm and possibilities of fatal accidents or of serious addictions, then we will have served our youth well.

In addition to this general picture, we have provided some facts and figures on specific addiction risks and behaviours, including

-             Tobacco Use (the most prevalent substance abuse risk)

-             Alcohol (the second most prevalent and the one with immediate consequences if inebriated)

-             Over the counter medicines and other legal products (such as inhalants, crystal meth and others)

-             Illegal and illicit drugs (such as marijuana and others)

-             Other addictions such as gambling

Please see our section on what Schools Can Do for general information on effective prevention, treatment and rehabilitation approaches as well as specific school-based and school-linked programs and policies that can reduce the harms associated with problem substance use.
