CANADIAN HOME AND SCHOOL FEDERATION
110th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

 

   Baddeck, Nova Scotia - The Canadian Home and School Federation just celebrated the 110th      

   anniversary of the Home and School movement. Delegates from across the country participated in a

   4-day Conference discussing and collaborating on important educational issues for Canadian

   children and youth including: child health, bus safety, school libraries, substance abuse, copyright.

   CHSF HAS BEEN DESIGNATED TO BE OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE!

   May 27th – Together, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada and Parks Canada hosted

   the unveiling ceremony of a plaque commemorating the Canadian Home and School Federation’s

   historical significance as it has been designated by Canadian Heritage.  Opening welcome was given

   by the CHSF President, Georgina Allen.

 

   Delivering some of the key points in the Federation’s vast history was CHSF Eastern Vice President,

   Glyn Morgan. “In 1927, CHSF played a key role in positioning schools at the center of community

   interests and, thus, engendered the Canadian population an acceptance of the public education

   system…. The work of CHSF is more critical today than ever before and the Federation remains

   focused on its mission to support the children and youth of our country.”

 

   “Parents, volunteers and home and schools are an important partnership in student success,” spoke

    Jamie Muir, Minister of Education for the Province of Nova Scotia.

 

   Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, addressed the gathering stating that this

   historical designation “shows the importance that your organization (CHSF) makes” and that “a lot

   happens through volunteers.”

 

   A most touching welcome was made by Nancy Langley, past Principal of the Baddeck Academy and

   member of the Baddeck Community Club, that reminded those present that we volunteer for the

   bright smiles of the children when she delivered a quote by Michelangelo: “Gratitude is the heart’s

   memory.”

   Banquet guests included: Honourable Jamie Muir, Nova Scotia Minister of Education; David

   Brennick, Coordinator of Student Services, Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board; Nancy

   Langley, representing the past Baddeck Home and School Associations.

 

   The CHSF was proud to honour 3 Provincial Award Recipients and 3 National Award recipients:

·         Samuel R. Laycock Award was presented to Sandra Himmelman of Nova Scotia as an educator who through dynamic leadership, inspiration and love of children has made a real contribution to relations between school and home.

·         Health Issues Awards were presented to Pam Mood and Shirley Campbell, both from Nova Scotia, in recognition of their special efforts in the area of health education.

 

·        National Volunteer Recognition Award was honored to Beverly Mullin, Nova Scotia and Michelle Armstrong, Central Vice President, to recognize their exceptional volunteer commitment to the Canadian Home and School Federation and the provincial affiliates.

SUCCESSFUL 109th ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING


MONTREAL- The Canadian Home and School Federation just celebrated their 109th Anniversary. Delegates from across the country participated in a 3-day Conference discussing and collaborating on important educational issues for Canadian children and youth including: literacy, media exposure, access to school libraries, copyright, and the rights of children.

The 2004-2005 CHSF Executive is:

Invited speakers included; Senator Landon Pearson, Terry Price, Canadian Teachers Federation President, Linda Millar Vice-President Concerned Children’s Advertisers.

Banquet guests included: Marcus Tabachnick, Chairman Quebec English School Board Association, Marny Beale, President Canadian Association of Principals, Donna Norris Quebec Federation of Home School Federation

The CHSF was proud to honour 3 Provincial Award Recipients and 3 National

-Margaret Mitchell of Quebec was awarded the Samuel R. Laycock Award for her
continuous work in public education
-Health Issues Award recipient was Shirley Straughton of Quebec for her
successful efforts regarding the safety issues of residential trampolines
-Barbara Milne-Smith, former President of CHSF and Pat Johansen, Central
Vice-President were awarded National Volunteer Recognition Award
for their continual support of CHSF.
-Marilyn Ashby and Silvia Dyck were honoured with CHSF Life Member Pins.
