Baddeck, Nova Scotia - The Canadian Home and School Federation just celebrated the 110th anniversary of the Home and School movement. Delegates from across the country participated in a 4-day Conference discussing and collaborating on important educational issues for Canadian children and youth including: child health, bus safety, school libraries, substance abuse, copyright. CHSF HAS BEEN DESIGNATED TO BE OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE! May 27th – Together, the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada and Parks Canada hosted the unveiling ceremony of a plaque commemorating the Canadian Home and School Federation’s historical significance as it has been designated by Canadian Heritage. Opening welcome was given by the CHSF President, Georgina Allen.
Delivering some of the key points in the Federation’s vast history was CHSF Eastern Vice President, Glyn Morgan. “In 1927, CHSF played a key role in positioning schools at the center of community interests and, thus, engendered the Canadian population an acceptance of the public education system…. The work of CHSF is more critical today than ever before and the Federation remains focused on its mission to support the children and youth of our country.”
“Parents, volunteers and home and schools are an important partnership in student success,” spoke Jamie Muir, Minister of Education for the Province of Nova Scotia.
Mark Eyking, Member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, addressed the gathering stating that this historical designation “shows the importance that your organization (CHSF) makes” and that “a lot happens through volunteers.”
A most touching welcome was made by Nancy Langley, past Principal of the Baddeck Academy and member of the Baddeck Community Club, that reminded those present that we volunteer for the bright smiles of the children when she delivered a quote by Michelangelo: “Gratitude is the heart’s memory.”
